City Council has approved the 2017 special archery hunt, which includes spring turkey hunting (west of Bench Street) and fall deer hunting within specific archery zones in the City Limits. The special archery hunt allows hunters to harvest up to 5 deer each within these archery zones. The program was originally established in the late 1990s in response to citizen complaints of deer-related damage to local gardens, shrubs and trees, as well as traffic safety concerns. The hunt proved to be an effective way to keep the deer population at a manageable level and has subsequently been ongoing since that time.
Every year, City staff works with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (MnDNR) to evaluate the deer harvest statistics from the previous year’s hunt, review the current deer population, discuss any issues from the previous year’s hunt and recommend changes. After reviewing the information and making a staff recommendation based upon the findings, the matter goes before the City Council for approval. The City Council has chosen to approve the hunt for 2017.
As the hunt takes place within parts of the city limits, special city rules apply, as well as all MnDNR hunting regulations. Complete information including the areas available for hunting, permit requirements, and hunt parameters can be found at http://www.red-wing.org/deerhuntprogram.html .
