On October 20 at 9:21 p.m. the Red Wing Fire Department was dispatched to a fire alarm at the City of Red Wing Solid Waste Campus Waste to Energy facility. On arrival, crews found a large amount of refuse on fire on the tipping floor storage area. The first arriving engine utilized a high flow nozzle known as a "Blitz Fire Nozzle" to knock down the fire. Salvage and overhaul was challenging due to the large quantity of refuse involved.
There was some damage of an unknown dollar amount to one wall in the storage area, as well as water damage to the electrical system.
Responding apparatus included: 2 engines, 1 ladder truck, and 1 ambulance. 17 firefighters also responded to the fire.
The State of Minnesota Duty Officer was notified due to the possibility of contaminated runoff from the fire operations. The Fire Department as well as City of Red Wing employees worked to contain the runoff with earthen berms and absorbent booms.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
