Celebration Lanterns Remain Illegal in Minnesota

Friday, June 21 2013 12:00 AM

Recently, there has been a rise in the use of heat propelled lanterns that float through the air, blow out of sight and land wherever fate drops them.  The use of these lanterns has become increasingly popular worldwide as a means of celebrating special occasions.

These devices with their candle style flame, often called “Sky Lanterns”, “Chinese Lanterns” or “Celebration Lanterns”, pose a distinct fire and safety threat to commercial buildings, homes, parks, and wild land settings.

Many people do not realize that they are in violation of our state fireworks law and it is illegal to sell or use sky lantern devices in the state of Minnesota.  They are listed under statute 624.20 as “a type of balloon which requires fire underneath to propel them”.  The Red Wing Fire Department would like to remind citizens that these lanterns create a potential, serious fire and safety hazard.  Retailers are asked to remove them from their shelves at this time.  Consumers who have purchased them are encouraged to return them for a refund or dispose of them safely without using them.
