Thursday, January 11 2018 10:23 AM

The Red Wing Police Department, selected Mathew Murillo, Michael Diaz, and Mae Schueller as the recipients of the 2017 "Grow the Grinch's Heart" challenge. Children were encouraged to visit the Red Wing Police Department's Grinchmas photo booth hosted by the St. James Hotel this past November. Residents were invited to take a photo with the Grinch and were encouraged by the Chief to enter the challenge of growing the Grinch's heart three sizes by giving back to their community.  Treat bags were given to each child that visited the booth.

Mae Schueller’s good deed was ringing bells for the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle. "Mae's act of kindness is an excellent example that no matter your age or size kindness makes a difference," said Police Chief Roger Pohlman.

>Mathew Murillo raised $171.17 for the Humane Society of Goodhue County. He also spends his free time playing with the cats and walking the dogs every chance he gets. "Matthew is a true leader," said Police Chief Roger Pohlman.

Michael Diaz's good deed was using kind and encouraging words to help a classmate gain strength and courage to ride the bus. Michael saw the problem and found the solution by showing kindness. "Michael has led by example and is a role model," said Police Chief Roger Pohlman. (was not present for presentation)

Red Wing Mayor Sean Dowse, Police Chief Roger Pohlman, and the Grinch, also known as Officer Brian Metling presented each recipient with a copy of the "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" by Dr. Seuss and a stuffed caricature from the book. The prizes were donated by the Red Wing Police Benevolent Association and the River View Lodge #7 Fraternal Order of Police.

An act of kindness, no matter how small, will always have a positive impact.
