On May 19th the Red Wing Heritage Preservation Commission is hosting an open house from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm at the Betcher Memorial Chapel in Oakwood Cemetery to celebrate Oakwood Cemetery's listing on the National Register of Historic Places (February 2012). The open house is open to the public and will include a presentation at noon by Daniel Hoisington of Hoisington Preservation Consultants regarding Oakwood's history and the National Register of Historic Places listing.
This is a great opportunity to see the interior of one of Red Wing's historic landmarks. In addition to the open house, the Goodhue County Historical Society will be conducting a walking tour of the cemetery grounds at 10:00 am to approximately 11:30 am on May 19th. The walk will be led by Johanna Grothe, Collections Manager at the Goodhue County History Center, and will touch on the history of Oakwood Cemetery, mourning practices during the Victorian Era, and symbolism on headstones. There is a $5.00 fee for the walking tour; reservations should be made by contacting the Goodhue County History Center at 388-6024.
