The Red Wing Heritage Preservation Commission (HPC) and Red Wing Downtown Main Street are sponsoring an architectural scavenger hunt to celebrate National Preservation Month in May. Entry forms consisting of a dozen cropped and filtered photos of architectural detailing found in downtown Red Wing are available at various downtown businesses, the Red Wing Downtown Main Street Office, and the City of Red Wing Community Development Building. Contestants must match each architectural detail with the address, historical name, or current tenant name of the building to which it belongs. Entries having all 12 answers correct will be entered into a drawing for prizes donated by local businesses.
All of the buildings can be found in downtown Red Wing and are located within the Downtown Historic District or the Heritage Mall Historic District; a map of the districts is included on the reverse side of the entry form. The contest is free and open to the public. Entries will only be accepted on the official entry form. Only one entry per address will be accepted. Entries must be mailed or delivered to: Red Wing HPC, 419 Bush Street, Red Wing, MN 55066, before 4:30 pm May 23, 2011. Answers will be revealed and prizes will be drawn on May 26, 2011. Winners will be contacted by the HPC. Answers and prize winners will be listed on the City of Red Wing's web-site at www.red-wing.org on May 27, 2011. Click here for a copy of the entry form. In addition to the community-wide scavenger hunt, the HPC is also sponsoring a similar scavenger hunt exclusively for 6th graders in Red Wing schools to compliment their Minnesota History studies and their Red Wing history curriculum.
