Dan Guida, Director of the Red Wing Arts Association (RWAA) received approval from the City Council on Tuesday, November 12, 2013 to place a Veterans Sculpture in Levee Park, one component of a larger Veterans Art Project. Their goal is to increase awareness in our community of the veteran experience. The other components of the project include a Depot Gallery show with artwork created by veterans. A presentation by retired General John Borling, author of “Taps on the Walls”, poetry written while a prisoner in the Hanoi Hilton in North Vietnam will be held on May 20, 2014 at the Sheldon Theater, followed by a Veterans Art Retreat with 40 veterans participating in a weeklong arts experience May 19-26, 2014.
The Red Wing Comprehensive Plan encourages the development of public art projects and partnerships and the sculpture project meets that objective. The sculpture will fit the location in Levee Park without obstructing views of the river. With the approval from the City Council, the RWAA can now pursue grants and contributions for the project which they hope to install in the spring of 2014.
