On December 12, 2011, Red Wing City Council members unanimously approved the purchase of 15
Automated External Defibrillators (AED's) for installation at several City facilities.
Each year more than 250,000 Americans die from sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). SCA strikes people of all ages, all degrees of fitness and usually strikes without warning. Many of these lives can be saved if bystanders quickly phone 911, begin CPR and provide defibrillation.
All AED's are designed to guide untrained rescuers through the process of early defibrillation and initiation of CPR.
The AED's purchased for City facilities, also provide rescuers with real-time feedback, visual and audio, on the performance of CPR. If CPR is not started, it will tell you to start. Not pushing hard enough? It will tell you to push harder. Not pushing fast enough? It will guide you to the correct rate. It will also tell you "Good Compressions" when you are pushing correctly.
The AED's will be located at City Hall, the Red Wing Library, the Sheldon Theatre, Oakwood Cemetery, Wastewater and Water Treatment Plants, Public Works Buildings, the Solid Waste Campus, Colvill Courtyard and Water Park, Bay Point and Colvill Marinas and the Red Wing Fire Department.
The AED's were purchased using approximately $23,500.00 from the City of Red Wing 2011 contingency funds.
