The City of Red Wing’s Solar Projects are featured in the November issue of the Public Works magazine. The Red Wing Public Library has added Mango Languages to their online resources. Mango Library Edition is a subscription-based product that is available to libraries. It includes a variety of resources to help patrons learn practical conversation skills for languages spoken around the world. We were able to select 12 languages. We selected English for Spanish Speakers, Arabic (MSA), Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Spanish (Latin American), and Swedish. Citizens concerned about clean water issues are invited to an open house scheduled by the MPCA at the St. James Hotel on December 3. The public meeting will be held from 4:00-6:00 p.m. in order to review and comment on a proposed statewide strategy for reducing the nutrients: phosphorus and nitrogen that are wreaking havoc on surface and groundwater. Comments received will be integrated to strengthen the recommendations contained in the draft strategy which is available for review before the meeting on the web at: www.pca.state.mn.us/nutrienteducation
Fourth of July fireworks have been organized and funded through various volunteer efforts including the most recent efforts by Mississippi Alumination. In 2013, fireworks did not occur on the Fourth of July with public attention drawn to the fact that the City of Red Wing had not provided funding. The City Council approved a contribution of up to $10,000 based on a one-to-one match with Mississippi Alumination for the 2014 fireworks. The community’s participation and input in the budget and levy process are critical, valued and welcomed. The City Council will hold its annual truth-in-taxation meeting on Monday, December 2 at 7:00 p.m. The meeting will be held in the City Council Chambers in City Hall located at 315 West 4th Street. The purpose of the meeting is to provide the community with information regarding the City of Red Wing’s 2014 property tax levy and budget and take public input. Bill Morris of Decision Resources, Ltd. presented the results of the 2013 Residential Survey to the City Council. Bill reviewed the approach to the survey, and analyzed the results. The 2013 survey results were compared to the 2005 survey results. The survey results reflected a community that trusts its city government, rates city services very high and in general confirms that people are very happy living in Red Wing. Red Wing improved its ratings from 2005 to 2013 in almost every measurable category, and is in the upper quartile of every state wide positive comparison. The City Council approved a Golf Course Management Agreement with the Red Wing Municipal Golf Corporation on Monday, November 25th. The Council approved a five year agreement with the non-profit Corporation. The agreement open Mississippi national Golf Links as a public golf course in 2014. The Red Wing Municipal Golf Corporation Board will operate the Course. The City will contribute no more than $41,000 in financial support for 2014 operations, and no more than $169,000 in Capital Investment in the golf course in 2014. The City of Red Wing Public Works Department will be restricting various portions of Levee Road beginning Tuesday, November 19, 2013. Infratech Inc. will be cleaning the main sewer line beginning at Pottery Pond, heading east toward Broad Street.
Traffic lanes and parking stalls will be restricted in the areas crews are working; however Levee Road will not be closed to vehicle traffic. The location of the restrictions will vary as the crews move from the Pottery Pond to Broad Street.
