Red Wing City Council held their annual workshop on Friday, January 20 and Saturday, January 21.The meeting began with discussion about the City's legislative issues for 2012. The Solid Waste Campus has proposed new public hours that will replace the existing seasonal schedule. The previous schedule attempted to provide service based on seasonal customer demand trends. However, this schedule ultimately conveyed a confusing message due to the variable day to day hours and seasonal changes. On January 21st at 04:17, the Red Wing Fire Department received a call reporting loss of electricity and smoke in a house located at 1107 South Park St. Firefighter/paramedics were on scene within 5 minutes of receiving the call and found indications of an attic fire. Fire fighters breached the ceiling in the second story of the house and extinguished the fire using water and compressed air foam. Extensive overhaul of the ceiling and attic were required to completely extinguish the fire. The fire was completely out after approximately 45 minutes. The Red Wing Entrepreneurial Community Growth Initiative Idea Slam brought 100 participants together to asset map, generate project ideas, present ideas and vote on Quick-Start projects. The Saturday event was well-attended by both long-time citizens and people new to the Red Wing area who came to brainstorm, network, and make vital connections on ideas to help support entrepreneurial efforts in our community. On Jan. 14th at 00:13, the Red Wing Ambulance and Fire Department received a call reporting a structure fire at 407 Green St.Firefighter/paramedics were on the scene within 4 minutes of receiving the call to find heavy smoke emitting from the basement and 1st floor of the 2 story structure. All of the occupants were out of the structure on arrival. Heavy fire conditions were found in the basement which quickly spread to the first and second floors. I first of all would like to thank the council for accepting the proclamation allowing City of Red Wing flags to be at half mast for one week in honor of Officer Shawn Schneider of the Lake City Police Department.
I know Shawn's family, as well as his extended law enforcement family, appreciate the City of Red Wing honoring the loss of Officer Schneider who was killed in the line of duty.

MINNEAPOLIS - Operators at Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant declared an alert at 3:53 a.m. today after workers discovered sodium hypochloride, commonly known as chlorine bleach, leaking from a tank in the screen house. The chemical is used to treat water that is brought into the plant for cooling.There was no release of radioactive material associated with this event, and it poses no danger tothe public. No plant workers have been injured. The sodium hypochloride leaked from a tank and is fully contained within a berm. An environmental crew is at the site to begin clean-up.
