Garbage Collection

Garbage TruckRed Wing is among nearly 30 percent of communities in Minnesota that have organized garbage and recycling collection services coordinated or provided by a public entity.  Instead of being dumped in a landfill, garbage collected by the city is delivered to the City’s Solid Waste Campus where it is sorted and processed into fuel for electricity generation.

Garbage Collection Guidelines

  • Garbage is collected once per week as per routes laid out on the City Map
  • Carts must be placed at the curb (or previously agreed upon location) before 6:00 a.m. on the designated collection day for your area.
  • Lids on carts must be closed. If the lid does not close and garbage falls out of the cart when the driver attempts to empty the cart, you will be charged for extra garbage.
  • Carts must be placed with the handle facing the house.
  • All garbage must be bagged and tied to prevent garbage from littering the streets.
  • Carts must be placed at least 4’ from any obstruction (parked cars, utility poles, mailboxes, recycling bins or snowbanks). Please do not place recycling bins and extra garbage in front of or directly next to your garbage can.
  • If your residence has more than one automated cart, you will need to place the carts 4’ apart.
  • Carts must be removed from the curb within 24 hours of collection

Proper Placement of Your ContainersImproperly placed carts, overfilled carts, and inaccessible carts may not be emptied, or you will be charged a service fee if the driver has to get out of the truck. If your cart is not out on time, you will be charged a call-back fee for the truck to return and empty your cart.

Missed Garbage

  • Customers who have had their weekly collection missed (meaning it was put out by 6 a.m. and placed in the proper location on your collection day and not picked up by the crew) must notify the Solid Waste Campus at 651.385.3658 by 4 p.m. on their regularly scheduled collection day or by 8 a.m. on the following work day to have the container picked up that week.
  • If your refuse was “missed” because it was not put out on time, not put out on your collection day, or not put out in the proper location, you will be charged a fee for the crew to return and empty your container either the same day or the following day.
  • Failure to notify the department will cause the dwelling to forfeit the one can weekly service for that week.

Extra Volume

  • Extra volume will be picked up by automated truck anytime. However, if the operator gets out of the truck it is a standard charge with the additional amount of garbage not to equal more than another cart.   For example – if you have 2 extra bags sitting alongside your can, the driver will empty your can, get out of the truck to put the extra bags in the can, then empty the can again. You will then be charged for 1 extra can of garbage.
  • If a residence continually generates extra volume (three extra volume pick-ups within one billing cycle), they will be required to increase the size of their container. Costs associated with the change of cart will be reflected on your monthly Utility Bill.

Valet Service

  • The City of Red Wing provides a valet service for elderly or handicapped residents that may have a medical issue that inhibits their ability to roll their cart to the curb. Simply call the Solid Waste Campus at 651.385.3658 to request the service.
  • In these cases, the driver will come up to the house to retrieve and empty the cart.
  • Valet Services are provided on Wednesdays.

What Day Is My Garbage Picked Up?

Garbage is collected once per week as per routes laid out on the City Map. The interactive map below is color coded to show the day of the week that each area of town is picked up.

  • Residents receiving Valet Service are collected on Wednesdays
  • Residents on the Rural Route, which would be outside the map area, are collected on Tuesdays
  • Holiday Weeks, garbage collection is delayed by one day from the holiday thru the remainder of the week.   (Example: if a holiday falls on a Monday, collection is delayed by 1 day the entire week. However, if the holiday falls on a Wednesday, then only Wednesday and Thursday collection is delayed 1 day)

Collection Fees

  • The waste collection fee includes the cost of collection and disposal of waste collected from each service location. Fees are based on the current operating budget and are adjusted periodically to reflect the cost of service.

    The monthly charge per residential unit will depend on the size of the cart serviced, and will be included on the monthly Utility Bill

    (1) 48 gallon cart - $20.51 per month             (1) 96 gallon cart - $34.38 per month

  • These carts MUST remain at the property if the property is sold.
  • All damage to the waste carts by the resident is the responsibility of the resident to replace at the current cost of a replacement cart.
  • If the cart is lost or stolen, it is the responsibility of the resident to replace the cart at the current replacement cost.
  • It is the responsibility of each property owner/resident to keep their cart clean and in good working condition.

What Do I Do With Sharps (Needles)?

The City of Red Wing’s policy for Sharps (Needles) disposal is for residents to place needles in a puncture-resistant container with a lid or top that can be secured. This container should be either heavy plastic or steel and capped. Once capped the container should have tape wrapped around the container lid or top to ensure a tight seal and then label the outside of the container clearly to indicate the container’s contents includes “Sharps”. This container should be placed in a waste container and NOT be placed in or with recyclables set out at the curb or placed in recycling receptacles within the City or County system to ensure these hazardous materials are DISPOSED of properly.
