Everyone can agree that the Highway 61/Main Street Reconstruction Project was a major undertaking. It was a complex reconstruction with many factors, including replacing antiquated underground infrastructures, improving multimodal travel and streetscaping, all while maintaining Red Wing’s quintessential historic charm. The project was successfully completed in the summer of 2016. Business owners and residents alike breathed a collective sigh of relief when the traffic patterns of their daily lives went back to normal. The project was completed so successfully, however, that it has now earned an award.
On January 27th, 2017, the City of Red Wing’s Engineering Department and Bolton & Menk, Inc., were presented with an Honor Award by the American Council of Engineering Companies for the Red Wing Main Street Reconstruction project at the 2017 Engineering Excellence Awards Banquet. Thirty-six projects were submitted statewide into the competition this year by 22 firms. This award acknowledges the significant accomplishments achieved through the project and the overall project execution. City Engineer, Jay Owens, was on hand to receive the award along with Cory Bienfang, Project Manager with Bolton & Menk.
“Being presented the ACEC Honor Award was simply a fantastic way to cap off the completion of this very successful project. A project that grew from some minor pedestrian crosswalk improvements at Broad Street and Bush Street to a full-blown reconstruction from Old West Main Street to Potter Street,” Mr. Owens commented about receiving the award.
Not content to keep the award to themselves, Mr. Owens, on behalf of the Engineering Department, presented the award back to the City Council and Mayor at the City Council meeting on February 13th, stating that the project represented a sacrifice from all levels of the community so the award should be presented back to the community. Mr. Owens commented “This truly was a community wide effort and I really believe former Mayor Bender’s remark at the project ribbon cutting, ‘Early on we all realized that we were in this together and we found a way to make it work.’ The residents, the businesses, the elected officials, the project team and the contractor worked together every step of the way to produce a product that we can all be proud of and enjoy well into the future.”
Construction and reconstruction may be unavoidable realities, but it takes a skilled team to pull off intense projects like the Main Street Reconstruction with aplomb. We are proud of the recognition the City of Red Wing Engineering Department has earned with this award and are honored by their desire to present it back to our community.
