Unlicensed Taxi Possibly Operating In Red Wing

Monday, April 8 2013 12:00 AM

The City of Red Wing has received reports that a taxicab company may be operating within the City limits without a taxi license.

Please be advised that the Red Wing City Code makes it unlawful “for any person to drive or operate a taxicab without a license from the City.”  There is no exception in the City Code that allows taxicab companies licensed in other municipalities to drop off passengers in Red Wing, or to pick up passengers in Red Wing for transport to the municipality in which the company is licensed.  Therefore, a company that is not licensed by the City of Red Wing is not permitted to operate in the City.

Citizens are further advised that taxicabs operating within the City of Red Wing must display external taxi markings.  Both sides of every licensed taxicab, when in use, must be plainly and permanently marked as a taxicab showing the full or abbreviated name of the licensed operator.  The cab must also visibly display license tags, including the number and year for which the license is issued.

A violation of Chapter 6 of the City Code can carry a civil fine up to $2,000.00 and can result in punishment as a misdemeanor.
