Red Wing Fire Department Implements “Star of Life” Program
(08/18/2010, Red Wing, Minn.) – Head injuries account for approximately 63% of all bicycling fatalities. Additionally, each year there are more than 99,000 skateboarding and in-line skating injuries. It is estimated that universal use of bicycle helmets by children would prevent 155 deaths, 45,000 head injuries and 55,000 facial and scalp injuries annually.
In conjunction with the Dakota County Emergency Medical Services consortium, the Red Wing Fire Department is participating in the “Star of Life” program. The program is designed to reward children “caught in the act” of being safe. Children “caught” wearing helmets while cycling, skateboarding or roller skating, receive a “Star of Life” sticker and a reward coupon donated by a local business. Rewards range from ice cream to movie passes and most anything in between. All rewards have been donated by local businesses. The support of the local business community has been overwhelming. The Red Wing Fire Department would like to thank the following local businesses for making this program possible:
