We are pleased to announce that the Red Wing Fire Department’s First Annual Fill the Boot campaign was a complete success. Over the course of three afternoons (August 28-30), Red Wing firefighters volunteered their time to collect an astounding $7,735. The amount of funds collected increased every day as firefighters found the best intersections and motorists gained a better understanding of what was occurring.
Firefighter Matt Lenz was the main organizer of this event and succeeded in recruiting approximately 6-8 firefighters each night. Following the campaign, Matt said, “Every firefighter that I’ve talked to had nothing but positive things to say about their first Fill the Boot experience. Overall the citizens seemed to think it was a very positive experience as well. We got lots of “smiles, thank yous, waves, and other positive gestures.”
We have taken notes on the most impactful intersections and the best places to put signage for future campaigns. Matt’s only other feedback was that incorporating on-duty firefighters into future Fill the Boot campaigns would most certainly increase participation and dollars raised. Many other full-time fire departments in MN do operate Fill the Boot campaigns on duty (ready to respond to any calls), so this is something for consideration next year.
We are confident that fundraising will increase next year as the community becomes more aware of the campaign. We were pleased to have ample coverage by the Republican Eagle this year. With continued media coverage far in advance, we will most likely see an increase in donors and more excitement leading up to the campaign
We would like to personally thank Mayor Egan, the Red Wing City Council, and the entire Red Wing community for making this year’s Fill the Boot such a great success!
