Tuesday, May 20 2014 12:00 AM

On the afternoon of Tuesday May 20 at 1225pm, City of Red Wing staff reported a possible fall victim on Barn Bluff. It was reported that a backpack was found off the trail on the north side of the bluff. The soil around the backpack was disturbed as if someone had slipped over the steep embankment.

Red Wing Fire and Police Department personnel responded to the top and bottom of Barn Bluff to conduct a victim search and prepare for possible victim extrication.  Red Wing Fire Department personnel utilized technical rescue equipment and techniques to rappel down the north face of the bluff and conduct the search. A child carrying harness system, resembling a backpack, was located off the trail but no victims were found.

The Minnesota State Patrol helicopter was requested for assistance but was cancelled by the Fire Department after the ground search had been concluded.

The mission of the Red Wing Fire Department is to enhance the safety and security of the community by providing cost effective protection of life and property, through fire prevention, public education, fire suppression and emergency medical care.
