Red Wing Fire Department Responds to Cave Rescue

(5/01/2012, Red Wing, Minn.) - On 5/01/2012 at 15:31, the Red Wing Fire Department received a call reporting two juveniles were lost in a cave in the West Avenue area.

Firefighter/paramedics were on the scene within two minutes and started a search and rescue operation.

Initial activities included entry into the confined space, searching the caves, assisting the juveniles out and returning them to their parents. The juveniles were lost in the cave for more than 1 ½ hours and were rescued without injury.

Apparatus used on the scene included 2 fire engines, 1 ladder truck and 1 ambulance. A total of 8 full-time firefighter/paramedics searched the cave for more than 1 hour. Red Wing Fire Department was assisted by Red Wing Police, Goodhue County Sheriffs Department and Goodhue County Dispatch.

The abandoned caves are on private property and should not be entered by anyone. Only personnel trained in confined space entry with proper safety and oxygen monitoring equipment should conduct a rescue in these conditions.
