The Red Wing Police Department is urging motorists to drive attentively and be ready for school buses, especially for children exiting school buses.
Last year in Minnesota, there were 553 bus crashes that resulted in seven deaths (none of which were student bus occupants) and 211 injuries (of which 65 were student bus occupants). The 2013 Nite to Unite event will be held on Tuesday, August 6th. Nite to Unite is a community event that helps people connect with other residents in their neighborhood in an effort to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness. The community event also stresses the importance of reporting suspicious activity in neighborhoods.
Police Officers, Firefighters and Public Works Personnel, as well as City Council members, will attend block parties throughout Red Wing. Neighborhoods will also collect food for the Red Wing Area Food Shelf.

The posted speed is the speed limit, and Red Wing Police Department, along with AREA LAW ENFORCEMENT, are emphasizing the need to drive at safe speeds through accelerated speed patrols, July 6–21. The enforcement and education effort is coordinated by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety.

Officer Jeff Burbank, of the Red Wing Police Department, was named to the 2013 Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS) Office of Traffic Safety DWI Enforcer All-Star team for his efforts to prevent alcohol-related crashes and resulting tragedies. Officer Burbank arrested 47 drunk drivers in 2012.
The All-Stars are sponsored by AAA Minneapolis.

During the June 10th, 2013, City Council meeting, Officer Jeff Burbank and his K-9 partner, Maverick, were recognized for graduating from the St. Paul K-9 Foundation Patrol Dog 1 - Basic Handler Course, on May 23, 2013. During the course, Officer Burbank and Maverick were certified in area searches, building searches, evidence recovery, tracking, apprehension, agility, obediance and handler protection. Red Wing resident, Reggy Lynch, is presented with a certificate of appreciation by Acting Mayor Bayley and Police Chief Roger Pohlman during the June 10th, 2013, City Council Meeting. On May 18th, 2013, Mr. Lynch observed two individuals remove a welder from his neighbor's garage and depart the area in a passenger car. Acting Mayor Lisa Bayley swears in the newest Red Wing Police Officer, Kyley Groby, during the June 10, 2013, City Council meeting. Officer Groby graduated from Red Wing High School in 2008 and from Minnesota State University - Mankato, with a Bachelor's Degree in Law Enforcement, in 2011. Prior to accepting the position with Red Wing, Groby was an Officer with the Mankato Police Department. We welcome officer Groby to the Department!
On 5-15-2013, at approximately 8:50 PM, the Red Wing Police Department and Red Wing Fire Department responded to a medical assist on the north side of Barn Bluff. Upon officer arrival, witnesses were performing CPR on a male that appeared to have fallen from the top of Barn Bluff. The male victim was pronounced dead at the scene and transported to Mayo in Rochester. Upon further investigation, witnesses stated that the man was seen jogging on the top of Barn Bluff approximately 20 minutes earlier and had asked for directions off the bluff. On 5-15-2013, at approximately 2:36 PM, the Red Wing Police Department responded to a vehicle-bicyclist accident at the intersection of West Avenue and Putnam Avenue. Investigation revealed that Crystal Guajardo (34) of Red Wing was driving a 2007 Pontiac Vibe, making a right hand turn from West Avenue onto Putnam Avenue, when a 12-year old male juvenile riding a bicycle entered the intersection. The bicycle struck the vehicle in the left front corner causing the juvenile to be ejected from his bicycle and striking the vehicle's windshield.
