Some of the reasons cited for the decision to move forward at this time are:
1) Safety of walkers in the area due to high traffic volumes and curving streets on these collector routes, particularly for children, elderly & handicapped.
2) Connectivity of walking routes in the area. This project will connect multiple streets with existing sidewalks in the Hi Park & Pine Ridge areas.
3) Better walking access to three neighborhood parks in the area.
This project was originally ordered in for construction by City Council in 2008 after a public process including a neighborhood meeting and public hearing on the project, however, due to budget constraints the project had been delayed twice.
Here is a link to an aerial photo showing existing sidewalks in the area, locations of the neighborhood parks, traffic counts, and the 2012 sidewalk project location.
