LED Rapid Flash Beacon Installed on Fourth Street

The City of Red Wing has installed an LED Rapid Flash Beacon system on the mid-street crossing on Fourth Street between Jordan Tower I and the Downtown Plaza. The Jordan Towers Resident Council raised funds to purchase all the materials beginning in December of 2011.  The support from the community was overwhelmingly positive and the fundraiser met its goal three months ahead of schedule. LED Rapid Flash Beacon systems are activated by the pedestrian and flash only as the pedestrian is crossing the street. Studies of LED Rapid Flash Beacon systems have shown that vehicle-pedestrian incidences in crosswalks are reduced by as much as 80%.  The Beacon is an attempt to make the City more pedestrian friendly as per Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan adopted by the City Council in 2011.
