Minnesota DNR to Conduct Controlled Prescribed Burns on Sorin’s Bluff and the Billings-Tomfohr Conservation Area on October 16th, 17th, and 18th
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the Conservation Corps of Minnesota in cooperation with the City of Red Wing and the Red Wing School District will be conducting several controlled prescribed burns of the native prairies on Sorin’s Bluff/Memorial Park and the Billings-Tomfohr Conservation Area on October 16th, 17th, and 18th. The purpose of the burns is to reduce invasive species in these areas and to stimulate existing native plants. These burns are the first steps of a long range management plan to preserve and enhance these native prairie communities within Red Wing.
The schedule for the prescribed burns is dependent on weather and wind conditions, but is tentatively set as follows:
Wednesday, October 16th – South face of Sorin’s Bluff; three separate units will be burned adjacent to Bush Street.
Thursday, October 17th – South face of the main bluff at the Billings-Tomfohr Conservation Area; two separate units will be burned north of Twin Bluff Middle School and its grounds
Friday, October 18th – this day is reserved as a backup day due to poor weather or wind conditions on the previous two days; if necessary, prescribed burns could take place at either site.
Please be aware that the fires and smoke will be noticeable from great distances due to the bluff top prairie locations and that some of the burn units are adjacent to residential properties. Residents and visitors are encouraged to avoid these areas while the prescribed burns are taking place and while burn crew members are on the scene.
