City to Participate in the Minnesota GreenStep Cities Program

Wednesday, March 9 2011 12:00 AM

On February 28, 2011 the Red Wing City Council voted unanimously to authorize the City to participate in the Minnesota GreenStep Cities program and appointed the Sustainability Commission to serve as the coordinator. The GreenStep Cities program assists cities in implementation of Sustainability Best Management Practices by providing resources, information, and networking focused on five categories:

  1. Building and Lighting
  2. Transportation
  3. Land Use
  4. Environmental Management
  5. Economic and Community Development

Many cities have the best intentions to become eco-conscious but find information, funding, and implementing those ideas is a daunting challenge. The Minnesota GreenStep Cities program is geared at helping Minnesota cities to learn about best practices that are being used elsewhere and how they might be applied here in Red Wing. The best way to learn more about the program is to link to the website, http://greenstep.pca.state.mn.us/ which provides resources, goals, specific steps, cost-benefit analysis, and information that the Sustainability Commission hopes to use to steer Red Wing's sustainability efforts.
