communicationsRed Wing’s favorite recycling hero, Rubin the Blue Bin, recently earned the City of Red Wing a national award! The City-County Communications & Marketing Association (3CMA) chose this Public Service Announcement (PSA) video production to win the 2009 Award of Excellence in the TV and Videos-Promotional Video category.

The purpose of the Rubin the Blue Bin PSA was to inspire Local Government Access Channel 6 viewers to participate in the City of Red Wing’s recycling program by informing viewers, “The only way to win is to throw it in the bin!” The toe-tapping production introduced Rubin the Blue Bin to Red Wing residents last year as a champion for environmental practices.

The PSA was written and produced by Communication Division staff Megan Amsden, Laura Cook, Rico Roman and former employee Aaron Utke. It featured several local actors including Twin Bluff Middle School students, Associated Bank employees, Jordan Towers’ residents, City of Red Wing seasonal employees and, of course – Rubin!

According to former Communications Director Deanna Sheely, “This production takes one aspect of city operations – recycling - and promotes it in an entertaining and attention-getting way that effectively communicates a message while putting a smile on the faces of viewers.” The Rubin the Blue Bin promotional video can be seen on Local Government Access Channel 6 or at the City of Red Wing’s Youtube page
