On January 14, 2011 the Red Wing Fire Department was notified that its 2010 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) application had been approved. The AFG application submitted in May 2010, requested funding to replace the Fire Department’s breathing air compressor/cascade system and purchase three power cots for ambulances. The breathing air compressor lacks the capacity to adequately fill modern, high pressure self contained breathing apparatus, therefore, failing to meet OSHA and NFPA standards and must be replaced. Existing manual ambulance cots are being replaced with power cots in an effort to minimize the back injury risks associated with the repetitive lifting associated transporting patients. The estimated cost of both projects totaled $95,350.00. The AFG award provides $66,500.00 toward these projects. The City of Red Wing is responsible for a 5% match of these funds ($3,500.00) and any additional related expenses. The Fire Department’s AFG award reduces the budgetary impact of making these essential improvements significantly, leaving the remaining funds available for other critical City projects. AFG funding is made available through the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Department of Homeland Security.
