Red Wing is being considered as a possible location for a new Habitat for Humanity program. At the October meeting of the Sustainability Commission, Dustin Harford, a VISTA with Habitat for Humanity presented the basics of the "Restore" program, and the necessary steps to develop this program in Red Wing.
A ReStore is a Habitat for Humanity program which sells donated new, used, and discontinued building materials at affordable prices. The products sold at ReStores are most often donated by individuals but also come from stores, manufacturers, and contractors. The product sold at ReStores often comes from home remodeling and deconstruction projects, and may consist of cabinets, flooring, tiling, hardware, doors, furniture, architectural items, fixtures, windows, and more. ReStores exist all over the state of Minnesota and across the country in order to sustain Habitat for Humanity affiliates such as Goodhue County Habitat for Humanity and to provide good stewardship of sustainable resources in our communities.
Currently in our area there are ReStores in La Crosse, Mankato, Winona, and the Twin Cities. In order to develop a ReStore in Red Wing four basic criteria must be met. 1. 3-4 strong volunteers to form a committee to organize the local effort are needed. 2. A good location must be found. Approximately 10,000 sq. ft. is required with loading access and retail space. 3. A Full-time paid manager with a strong business background and people skills. 4. Funding for start-up costs.
All of the profit generated by the ReStore would be used to help fund new home builds and home rehab projects in Red Wing and throughout Goodhue County. Red Wing has seen several new homes constructed through the Habitat for Humanity program, and this could be another local program to restore neighborhoods, encourage home ownership, and improve the tax base for Red Wing.
If you are interested in volunteering, donating, or advocating to bring a ReStore to Red Wing or if you think you are the right person to be considered for the manager's position, please contact Dustin at 388-9360 ext. 31, or firstname.lastname@example.org.
