Rochester, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Transportation invites the public to attend an open house May 14 at the Red Wing Public Library to learn more about the upcoming Highway 61 mill and overlay project to be completed in 2015.
The meeting is from 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 14 in the Foot Room of the Red Wing Public Library, 225 East Ave. A presentation is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
MnDOT engineers will provide an update on the status of the project and will give attendees an opportunity to provide comments to the project team. The project involves two segments of Highway 61:

On April 30, 2014, at 6:30 PM, the Hope Coalition “Kid’s Count” program held a Candlelight Vigil for Child Abuse Awareness. Gage Robinson and his mother, Penny, were the guest speakers. It was quite an emotional evening, with many of the surviving children from child abuse and neglect participating in the program. The last item in the program revolved around children of abuse presenting a yellow rose to their “Safety Person”, a person they feel safe in going to for help. On May 3rd, 2014, at approximately 1:17 P.M., the Red Wing Police Department received a report, from a 10 year old male, of suspicious activity. The male juvenile stated that he saw a bright red van stop abruptly and pull into the alleyway of the 400 block of 9th Street (between 9th and 10th Street). The van stopped near the juvenile, and a slender, caucasian female exited the passenger side of the vehicle. The male juvenile ran away from the approaching female. The Red Wing Police Department will again be hosting our annual Bicycle Rodeo on Saturday, May 10th, 2014 from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. The Rodeo will be held at the Goodhue County Law Enforcement Center parking lot at 430 West 6th Street in Red Wing. A bicycle safety course will be set up for the kids to ride their bicycles through and learn safety rules. Kids should bring their own bicycles. Free hot dogs and pop will be provided for all kids who participate. Many prizes and several bicycles will also be given away. The Rodeo is a fun and educational experience for the kids in the community!!
On April 28, 2014 the Red Wing City Council considered and approved Resolution #6670, redesignating Columbus Day as Chief Red Wing Day. The movement to change Columbus Day is nothing new, in 1990 South Dakota replaced Columbus Day with Native American Day. In 2011, the National Congress of American Indians passed a resolution supporting the changing of Columbus Day to Indigenous People’s Day.
