One of the goals of the City of Red Wing strategic plan is to ‘Capitalize on the thriving, dynamic and distinctive community character’. To further that goal, Hiawatha Broadband Communications will begin to install hardwired fiber optics to the Ole Miss Marina and Gas Dock and provide wireless services to the Ole Miss Marina boaters and Bay Point Park visitors. Additional streets were added to the ‘No Parking’ list for the upcoming winter season. Streets that are less than 30’ in width are too narrow for snow plows with parking on both sides of the street creating the need to send smaller equipment to the area which delays plowing on other streets. All of the areas affected have adequate off street parking available. Signs will be placed indicating ‘No Parking’ from November through April. At its October 28 Red Wing City Council meeting, the City Council approved a resolution for a Business Subsidy agreement between the Red Wing Port Authority and PMC Associates. Paul and Marsha Brown, the owners and operators of the Red Wing Mall, were able to secure Jo Ann Fabrics as tenant in the location recently vacated by the Peebles store. PMC Associates, the entity created by the Browns to operate their interest in the Mall provided funding of $400,000 to bring JoAnn Fabrics in as a tenant. The Golf Course Ad-Hoc Committee presented City Council guidelines to provide the framework of an agreement between the City and the Red Wing Municipal Golf Corporation. City Council was asked to provide direction on the guidelines. The consensus of the Council was to direct the Ad-Hoc to meet with the Red Wing Municipal Golf Corporation to try to work out an agreement in which the City would contribute no more than $190,000 toward the Mississippi National Golf Course in 2014 and a lesser amount in future years. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the Conservation Corps of Minnesota in cooperation with the City of Red Wing will be conducting several controlled prescribed burns of the native prairies on Sorin’s Bluff/Memorial Park on Monday, October 28th. The purpose of the burns is to reduce invasive species in these areas and to stimulate existing native plants. These burns are the first steps of a long range management plan to preserve and enhance these native prairie communities within Red Wing. Since 2010 the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) has encouraged firefighters across the country to participate in campaigns honoring women fighting cancer. RWFD joined the “Firefighters in Pink” campaign this year on behalf of Jeana L. Marks, sister of Firefighter/Paramedic Mike Dopkins, who was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year.

Motorists and passengers are reminded to buckle up this fall as extra Click It or Ticket seatbelt patrols take to the roads statewide October 4–19. Red Wing Police Department is among nearly 400 Minnesota agencies increasing patrols to encourage motorists to buckle up.
In the last three years on Minnesota roads (2010-2012), there were 852 motorist traffic deaths, of which 361 (42 percent) were not buckled up. Of those 361 killed, 42 percent were motorists ages 16–29, according to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety.
