Recently, there has been a rise in the use of heat propelled lanterns that float through the air, blow out of sight and land wherever fate drops them. The use of these lanterns has become increasingly popular worldwide as a means of celebrating special occasions.
These devices with their candle style flame, often called “Sky Lanterns”, “Chinese Lanterns” or “Celebration Lanterns”, pose a distinct fire and safety threat to commercial buildings, homes, parks, and wild land settings.

During the June 10th, 2013, City Council meeting, Officer Jeff Burbank and his K-9 partner, Maverick, were recognized for graduating from the St. Paul K-9 Foundation Patrol Dog 1 - Basic Handler Course, on May 23, 2013. During the course, Officer Burbank and Maverick were certified in area searches, building searches, evidence recovery, tracking, apprehension, agility, obediance and handler protection. Officer Burbank was also recognized for being a Minnesota Department of Public Safety 2013 DWI Enforcer All-Star for leading the Red Wing Police Department in DWI arrests in 2012. Red Wing resident, Reggy Lynch, is presented with a certificate of appreciation by Acting Mayor Bayley and Police Chief Roger Pohlman during the June 10th, 2013, City Council Meeting. On May 18th, 2013, Mr. Lynch observed two individuals remove a welder from his neighbor's garage and depart the area in a passenger car. Mr. Lynch provided the vehicle description and license plate number, which enabled a Goodhue County Sheriff's Deputy and Red Wing Police Officers to stop these individuals and arrest them before they could depart the Red Wing area. Acting Mayor Lisa Bayley swears in the newest Red Wing Police Officer, Kyley Groby, during the June 10, 2013, City Council meeting. Officer Groby graduated from Red Wing High School in 2008 and from Minnesota State University - Mankato, with a Bachelor's Degree in Law Enforcement, in 2011. Prior to accepting the position with Red Wing, Groby was an Officer with the Mankato Police Department. We welcome officer Groby to the Department!
On Thursday June 20, 2013 Fourth Street will be closed for vehicular traffic between the intersection of West 6th Street and Buchanan Street at Jefferson School and West Avenue at Central Park for the 4th Street Downhill Dash. The street will be closed between 4:15 and 7:30 PM. The event, sponsored by the Red Wing YMCA, is a community event to celebrate summer and will include waves of runners, joggers, and walkers. The Red Wing City Council will conduct a workshop on June 27, 2013 to review a preliminary report by the Study Team concerning the future use of Mississippi National Golf Links. The workshop will begin at 6:00 p.m. in the Foot Room of the Red Wing Public Library. The Study Team, led by consultant Jeff Schoenbauer with Schoenbauer Consulting, LLC, will present their preliminary report including a financial analysis drafted by Springsted, the City’s Financial Advisor. A reception for Mayor-elect Dan Bender will be held at 6:00 p.m. on June 24 in the gathering area of the City Council Chambers, 315 West 4th Street. At 6:45 p.m., Mayor-elect Dan Bender will be sworn into office fulfilling a partial term expiring January 2017.
Beginning June 18, 2013, work will begin on the construction of bituminous milling, bituminous reclamation, bituminous pavement overlay and other appurtenant construction on several streets and parking lots in Red Wing. These streets will have flaggers, lane closures in both directions, and traffic interruptions at various stages of construction. This project, when completed, will provide an improved driving surface for the public. The City of Red Wing has partnered with the Epilepsy Foundation of Minnesota (EFMN) to designate Red Wing as a Seizure Smart Community. Beginning in May and progressing over the next six months representatives from EFMN will be conducting free awareness training at schools, businesses, for the City staff and any organization that would like training.
Communities in the past that have received a Seizure Smart designation include Rochester, Owatonna, Fairmont, Duluth, Austin and St. Cloud. This a service donated by EFMN and there is no fee for participation.
