The City Council, at their August 23, 2010 meeting, authorized final payment to the engineering consultant that assisted with the design and construction support for the front end fuel cleaning project at the waste to energy facility. The construction is complete and the facility is operating in a normal fashion. Approximately 100 tons of refuse are being processed each week day. Final payment to the construction contractors is anticipated in the near future.
The City Council deferred the construction of a sidewalk project on Hallquist Avenue and Eunice Avenue at the Monday, August 23, 2010 Council meeting. This sidewalk construction was originally ordered by Council in 2008 for construction in 2009, but was later deferred for construction in 2011 due to budget cuts. Now Council has deferred the project a second time due to ongoing budget cuts so that construction is now scheduled for 2012. The City Council approved a request for the All-Way Stop at this intersection at the Monday, August 23, 2010 Council meeting. The request was made by the Live Healthy Red Wing group because of the trail/pedestrian crossing Old West Main Street near the Cannon Valley Trail Head. There is a new demonstration bike route being implemented later this summer from the Cannon Valley Trail head to Broad Street along Old West Main Street, Withers Harbor Drive, and Levee Road that will add to the number of pedestrians and bicycles using the crossing at this intersection. Recently the City of Red Wing entered into a contract with the Red Wing School District for Police School Liaison Officer services for the 2010/2011 school year. The Red Wing School District has agreed to pay $29,835 towards the cost of this position. Currently the City of Red Wing has one Police School Liaison Officer, and this position will be principally housed at the Red Wing High School, with time being spent on a weekly basis, at Twin Bluff Middle School. It is the intention of the City of Red Wing that the operations of city government be as open and transparent as possible. At the August 23, 2010, City Council meeting, staff reported on three processes used to gather citizen input on the budget situation, which included an ongoing web open ended comment site, a white pad located at the Library for ideas/comments, and a non-scientific phone survey of residents (click to view web site survey; Library white pad comments; telephone survey).
