Ask the Chief

Q: Why don’t I see the speed trailer out in the winter months?

Words "You Ask; We Answer; Submit your questions to askthe.policechief@ci.red-wing.mn.us" with

A: Red Wing Police Department Speed Trailer was manufactured by MPH Industries in 2006 and the trailer has served the citizens well over the past 14 years and will continue to serve for many more! The Speed Monitor Trailer controls speeding problems without tying up an officer’s time. The high-intensity sign informs drivers of their speed without always requiring a traffic stop, creating positive results and positive attitudes. The trailer does not take photographs or issue citations; it merely reminds drivers to be alert to their driving habits and slow down if the trailer indicates you are traveling over the posted speed limit.

Due to the age of our speed trailer and associated equipment, the 12-volt battery power source has a reduced run time in cold temperatures, which requires recharging after a couple hours compared to summer months. Also, due to snow accumulation/piles narrowing the width of the street, on-street parking and some locations not allowing parking from November to April severely restricts the safe placement of the speed trailer. This results in limited use of the trailer during the winter months, which we try to counter with targeted enforcement patrols when calls for service allow.

Thank you for your question, and I do plan to upgrade our current trailer once funding becomes available in our capital improvement plan. We take traffic safety seriously and appreciate citizens letting us know of areas of concern by calling 651-385-3155 or by sending an email to your assigned area officers, which can be located on the Community Policing map, located on our #RWPD page at https://www.red-wing.org/210/Police.
